Children and Family Service

This counselling and emotional wellbeing service has been specifically developed for children aged 5-16 years old and their families, who live in Forth Valley and have been affected by abuse including neglect, sexual, physical, and/or emotional abuse.

How we support children and young people:

  • Emotional support sessions
    • These will enable the young person to learn coping strategies and support their understanding of the emotions they are experiencing
  • Counselling
    • This will allow the young person to go on to process their experiences
  • EMDR
    •  EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) is a therapy which aims to help people recover from the impact that traumatic events can have on their life
  • Group work for young people
    • Group work allows young people to explore different topics such as emotion regulation and learn from one another

How we support adult family members:

  • Psychoeducation sessions and group work – this may involve peer support groups, understanding the impact of trauma and how to support young people

How the Triage Process Works

The young person or carer (if preferred) will be contacted by our admin team within 2 weeks to double-check that this service is suitable for you and to arrange a triage appointment.

Triage appointments take place at our main office in Alloa and last around 90 minutes, their purpose is to help you understand the service we provide and to assess your needs and risk level. Triage sessions take place up to 8 weeks after the initial call with our admin team.

A parent or caregiver will be asked to accompany the child or young person to the triage session. Helpful things to to think about before attending your triage appointment:

Where would you like support sessions to take place?

  • For adults: at Wellbeing Scotland, by phone or video call
  • For young people: in school/college, at Wellbeing Scotland

What would you like sessions to help with?

It is very helpful to come into this process with some idea of what would you like to be different. Here are a few examples:

  • Would you like to feel different
  • Handle day-to-day situations differently
  • Explore and tell your story

Do I have to tell everything at triage?

No, you can just speak about what you feel comfortable with. The triage appointment is the first step towards accessing support. It is also a place for you to ask us any questions so that we can ease any fears or worries you have about your journey ahead.
